UAE Schools Add Artificial Intelligence to Core Subjects for All Students

Teachers and schools navigate rollout of mandatory AI curriculum across UAE education system

Students across the UAE will soon study artificial intelligence as a formal subject, after the country approved a national AI curriculum for rollout across all public and private schools. Announced on Wednesday, the move places the UAE among what Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister, described as pioneering nations to develop integrated AI curricula spanning all educational levels.

The stakes for students are real. The curriculum will expose young people to AI applications and their risks while building awareness of responsible technology use, giving them foundational knowledge of AI systems, data, algorithms and the ethical dimensions of tools that are already reshaping workplaces and daily life. A pilot programme conducted in public schools produced what officials described as positive results before the wider rollout was approved.

Delivering that promise at scale falls largely on teachers. Approximately 22,000 educators across the nation will receive training to integrate AI into their own teaching methods, assessment practices, curriculum analysis and lesson planning. Whether that preparation proves sufficient is the central question schools are now wrestling with.

Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at Gems Education, outlined how instruction should evolve as students mature. Younger children can begin with basic concepts through storytelling, play and simple observations about what people and machines can do. Older students should progress toward designing and testing AI systems, exploring how bias enters algorithms, and applying the technology to real-world problems connected to future careers and study. Crausby argued that the greatest challenge will not be providing access to AI tools but ensuring safe, consistent and purposeful implementation at scale. That requires age-appropriate platforms, strong safeguarding and data privacy protections, assessment integrity, teacher confidence and deliberate efforts to prevent over-reliance on automation.

Success, she said, should be measured not by how frequently students use AI but by whether the technology helps them think more deeply, create more boldly and act more ethically.

Schools are already taking varied approaches. At Nord Anglia International School Dubai, the focus extends well beyond teaching students to operate generative AI tools. Gurbinder Mander, Head of Computer Science, explained that the school’s curriculum covers AI principles, data and algorithms, software use, ethical awareness, real-world applications, innovation and project design. Students learn how AI works, how it uses data, why it can produce incorrect or biased information and how to use it safely. The school has developed a whole-school Digital Fluency Curriculum stretching from early years through Year 13, with nearly 400 key learning points covering online safety, AI principles, digital literacy, IT skills and computational thinking.

Crucially, the school has embedded AI and digital fluency across all subjects rather than confining it to computer science. Every department identifies where key learning points can be taught meaningfully within its own curriculum, ensuring students apply these skills across all areas of learning, not just in dedicated technology classes.

Teacher development has emerged as equally important to the curriculum itself. At Nord Anglia International School Dubai, approximately 70 percent of professional development sessions are led by students, a deliberate choice to give young people a voice in shaping how AI education evolves. The school has also worked with students to develop an AI Usage Matrix that categorizes classroom tasks as human-only, AI-supported or AI-driven, requiring students to disclose how they used AI. This approach shifts focus from simply asking whether AI was used to understanding how it was used and what learning resulted.

At Credence High School, teacher training is treated as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO-Principal, said teachers learn through professional development clusters where they support each other, dedicated hands-on training days and the sharing of best practices across the school. Continuous learning, not a single induction, is the model.

By contrast, Rory Galvin, Director of Learning at ISP-Middle East, frames the challenge in terms of pace. The education sector has historically absorbed new technologies effectively, adapting them in ways that strengthen learning rather than disrupting practice overnight. The same measured approach matters with AI, he argued, requiring evidence-led decisions that ensure technology serves a clear educational purpose and that its impact on learning is understood and monitored.

What remains open is whether the 22,000 teachers being trained will feel genuinely equipped once they are standing in front of students, navigating questions about bias, privacy and academic integrity that even experts are still working through.
