Thousands Flock to Dubai for Pokémon Celebration; Fans, Families Gather for Major Franchis

DUBAI: On July 18 and 19, families, collectors, cosplayers, and competitive gamers gathered at Dubai Outlet Mall for the PokeWorld Party, a two-day celebration of one of the world’s most enduring entertainment franchises. Comicave, a major global retailer of collectibles, comics, toys, and entertainment merchandise, partnered with BST Community to organize the event, opening its doors to anyone with a stake in Pokémon culture, from parents introducing young children to the brand to seasoned trading card competitors.

The programming was deliberately broad. Attendees could join a Pokémon Go! 10th anniversary-themed celebration, compete in a Pokémon Go! PVP tournament, browse a Pokémon marketplace, visit an artist alley, play in a trading card game tournament, watch a Pokémon-inspired band perform, or enter their children in a kids’ cosplay competition. The range of activities reflected a clear intention to welcome both hardcore fans and casual visitors, making the event accessible across age groups and levels of fandom.

Ian Eleria from Comicave’s management team described the gathering as a community-first effort. “We organized various activities for everyone who is a fan of the Pokémon franchise to enjoy during the weekend,” he said in a statement to Arab News Japan. That philosophy showed in the turnout and the atmosphere across both days.

Participant response was strong. Eleria noted that family-oriented programming drew particular enthusiasm, with the Kids Cosplay Competition standing out as a highlight. “Family-friendly activations such as the Kids Cosplay Competition not only strengthened Comicave’s position as a leading name in the pop culture space but also reinforced our vision of becoming a welcoming community hub where fans of all ages, including families, can express their creativity,” he said.

What made the event distinctive was the convergence of communities that rarely occupy the same space. Trading card collectors, Pokémon GO players, cosplayers, artists, and anime enthusiasts all shared the same venue and, by most accounts, the same energy. “Seeing these different communities connect and celebrate together is exactly what PokeWorld Party was created to achieve,” Eleria added.

By contrast, many pop culture events in the region tend to cater to a single segment of fandom. The PokeWorld Party’s multi-track format suggested a different model, one that treats the fan community as genuinely plural rather than monolithic.

Comicave has signaled it intends to keep that momentum going. The retailer plans to host Cave Sketchouts x Art Bazaar on August 1, alongside a series of Marvel-themed activations. Larger regional events are also on the calendar, including MEFCC and an annual Batman Day celebration at Dubai Outlet Mall. “We have plenty of exciting experiences planned, and we can’t wait to share more details in the coming months,” Eleria said.

Whether the PokeWorld Party’s model of deliberately bridging fan communities becomes a template for future events in the UAE remains to be seen, but the appetite for that kind of shared creative space, judging by the response at Dubai Outlet Mall, appears to be real.
